Marcia is a Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) since 1997 and a Research Productivity Fellow from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil (CNPq). She is currently a Full Professor at UFRJ, in the Systems and Computing Engineering Program at COPPE. She earned her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ) (1987), and her M.S degree (1992) and Ph.D degree (1996) in Systems and Computer Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ, having visited the University of Iowa for one year in 1995/1996, as a Visiting Research Scholar from CNPq.

Marcia was a visiting researcher for eight months at the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing in Brazil (LNCC) in 1997, for a year at the University of Iowa in 2005/2006, and for nine months at the University of Michigan in 2023/2024. She has supervised more than 30 PhD and master students. She was vice-president of the Brazilian Society of Operational Research (SOBRAPO) in the 2017-2018 biennium and is currently a member of the editorial board of the journals OPTE – Optimization and Engineering, and TOP – Transactions in Operations Research.

Marcia also worked in industry, as a Systems Engineer in the Operations Research Department at the company White Martins S.A. in 1988. Her research area of interest is Optimization, working mainly with Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP), with an emphasis on the construction of convex relaxations for MINLP problems.
